The Town of Braintree passed the Community Preservation Act (CPA) in 2002, a statewide act that allows cities and towns to take an active role in long term planning.  Acceptance of the Community Preservation Act dedicates 1% of property taxes to fund open space, historic, affordable housing and some limited recreational initiatives.  The Planning and Community Development Office serves as staff to the Community Preservation Committee in their implementation of the CPA.  The Community Preservation Committee is a seven member volunteer committee appointed by the Mayor.
