Department Description

COMMUNITY PRESERVATION

In 2002 the Town of Braintree passed the Community Preservation Act (CPA).  Passage of CPA allowed the Town to establish a Community Preservation Fund to support open space, historic preservation, outdoor recreation, and community housing.  Monies for the fund come from a 1% property tax surcharge and matching funds from the state. Through 2016 CPA funds have supported; the creation of 17.5 acres of open space, restoration of 13 historic properties, creation or restoration of 4 playgrounds, and improvements to community housing units.

The town’s Planning and Community Development Office provides administrative and technical support to the seven member Community Preservation Committee (CPC) which oversees the community preservation program.
