Flood Hazard Mitigation:

The Town of Braintree is a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) under the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  Braintree property owners can seek assistance with flood related issues through the Planning and Community Development Department.  In 1990, the NFIP established a program benefiting communities like Braintree that undertook proactive floodplain activities beyond the requirements of the NFIP program.  The Community Rating System (CRS) program provides flood insurance holders the ability to obtain premium discounts on their rates based on the activities of the community in which their property is located.  More information about the program can be obtained by clicking on the CRS home page.

In addition to CRS activities, staff is available to assist residents with viewing the Town’s Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) issued by the FEMA that are retained in the department.  The FIRM maps nationwide are often updated as part of a map modernization program.  Communities must go through a process of FIRM map update and adoption to continue participation in the Flood Rate Insurance Program.  The Planning and Community Development office in collaboration with other Town departments oversees coordinates these

updates.
