The Braintree Council on Aging is the officially designated agency to evaluate,
promote and encourage new and existing activities and services for the older
residents of our Community in order to promote their self reliance, independence
and aging in place as long as possible.
A Community Focal Point, the COA is a highly visible place where anyone can receive
information and services, or have access to all of our community resources.
For family members, friends and neighbors, it is a resource to support their
efforts in caring for their elders.
For the community at large, it is a place to learn about the needs of older people
and the services available to help them plan for a productive, fulfilling and
healthy aging.
Services
Information and Referral: Provides Information and referral to available services
in the community regarding matter such as Housing, Food Stamps, Legal Issues,
Family Caregiving Assistance, Social support and activities, Case Management
and much more.
Outreach: The Outreach Department assists seniors and their families in obtaining
needed services which will prolong seniors independent living, improve their
quality of life
Friendly Phone Calls: A volunteer makes phone calls to Seniors who are homebound,
isolated and possibly in need of services.
Friendly Visitor Program: Sponsored by SSE, a Friendly Visitor will provide home
based services to homebound seniors and frail elders.
Nutrition: Home delivered meals by the COA
or SSE. Bi-monthly meals served at the COA. Call for reservations.
Transportation: for medical appointments, senior center activities, health clinics
and shopping or hospital visits as scheduling allows. Once a month transportation
to Boston or an out-of-area hospital is available. It is best to call as soon

Senior Citizen Municipal Service Program
Also know as the "work-for-tax" program, seniors have the opportunity
towork a maximum of 112 hours per fiscal year in any Town of Braintreedepartment
in order to receive a $750.00 tax abatement on real estate taxes.
Every effort is made to match seniors' skills and interests with job requirements.
Participants are placed in various town departments, such as the Council on Aging,
Town Hall, Library and Schools.

the Senior Center.
Shopping Bus: Tuesdays - Pickup at various locations to
the Stop & Shop on Grove Street, Braintree. Call 781.848.1963 for information.
Wednesday - shopping trips to Malls.
Healthcare: Blood pressure screenings, Flu clinic, health education
programs.
Medical Equipment: Loan of wheelchairs, walkers, bath seats,
and other equipment. Call for availability.
Shine: (Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders): Assistance
with health plan
selection,
Medicare claims, Senior Pharmacy Program.
Financial Assistance: Social Security, SSI, Tax Abatements,
Income Tax Assistance, Fuel and Emergency
Assistance.
Tax Counseling: Trained volunteers are available to assist elders
in the preparation of annual federal and state income tax returns.
Nutrition: Home delivered Special Diet Meals, Daily Lunch
at the Senior Center,
and a weekly Supper Club.
Monthly Newsletter: Up-to-date information on programs, services,
and activities. Volunteers deliver to town buildings, libraries, pharmacies,
banks, supermarkets, etc.

Recreation:
A wide range of activities such as Day Trips, Arts & Crafts, Computer Classes,
Tai Chi, Exercise, Strength Exercise, Cards Games, Tap & Line Dancing,
Painting, Photography, and Educational Presentations.
:: Support Groups::
- Vision: provides practical and emotional support to individuals suffering from
serious sight loss. Services are unique because they use a self-help approach
and are available
to individuals who are not legally blind.
- Triad: Community effort between senior citizens and law enforcement to reduce
the criminal victimization of elderly persons and enhance the quality of life
for all residents.
The following are two free programs of Triad:
"Are You Okay?" is an automated, confidential, computer telephone calling
program operating 24 hours a day at the Sheriffs Department. This system takes
the fear out of being alone and eases the concern of family and friends. A
brochure is
available.
Senior Key Guardian: This program provides numbered key tags for elders of Braintree.
Each tag is assigned to an individual; a confidential file is maintained by the
Police Department. Files contain information that assists the police in returning
lost keys
and in emergency situations.
:: Volunteer Information ::
The Braintree Council on Aging has many opportunities for persons of retirement
age to participate more fully in the life of their community through volunteering.The
COA is always in need of volunteers for existing programs. The COA Staff will
assist anyone interested in starting or developing new services or programs for
the residents of Braintree. Call the Council on Aging if you are interested now,
or feel that you will want
to be involved at some time.
VOLUNTEER POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
•To Deliver Special Diet Meals daily
• To Escort seniors on shopping trips and assist with bundles
• To Drive COA vans and bring seniors to and from medical appointments
and to COA activities
• To deliver Monthly newsletters to various locations in town
• To teach computer classes, arts and crafts, photography, dancing, yoga,
tai-chi, exercise classes and more.
• To assist with bi-monthly luncheons
• To make friendly phone calls to seniors who are isolated and homebound
• To assist with mailings, legislative alerts and fund raisers as needed
