Mayor Joseph C. Sullivan bio

A lifelong resident of Braintree, Mayor Sullivan attended Braintree Public Schools and graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Mayor Sullivan also holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

At age 26, Joe Sullivan became the youngest person ever elected to the Board of Selectman in Braintree.

From 1993 to 2003, Joe Sullivan served as Braintree's State Representative. He was Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation for six years where his responsibilities included planning the re-establishment of the Old Colony Rail for the South Shore, coauthoring the Metropolitan Highway System Legislation, the Rt. 3 North add-a-lane project and providing funding of a comprehensive state wide road and rail program.

In 2003, Mayor Sullivan was appointed Executive Director of the Massachusetts State Lottery.

Mayor Sullivan served as a member of the Blue Ribbon Transportation Finance Commission (2006) which identified the important needs of transportation throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

In November 2007, Joe Sullivan was elected as the first Mayor of Braintree and was re-elected in 2011 and 2015. He is a Past President of the Massachusetts Municipal Association and is a member of the Metropolitan Boston Mayors' Association. 

In 2015, Mayor Sullivan was appointed to serve on Governor Baker’s MBTA Special Panel which was established to offer recommendations on needed improvements for the MBTA and the Commuter Rail operations throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Mayor Sullivan was appointed by Governor Baker to the MassDOT Board of Directors for a 2 year term.

As Mayor, he has successfully reorganized Braintree town government to streamline services for the community. He has implemented many infrastructure projects including a 100 Roads Program, school and municipal building improvements and new parks, while remaining committed to public safety and education.
